올리비아 워커(Olivia Walker)는 영국에서 활동하는 도예가로, 물레 성형한 기물 위에 얇은 포슬린(백자토) 조각을 증식시키듯 붙이며 기물 형식을 조각적 표면으로 확장해 온 작가이다. 그는 재료의 축적과 기형 변형을 통해 성장과 침식, 생성과 소멸이라는 자연의 순환을 도자 조형으로 구현한다. 작품을 마주하면 표면을 이루는 촘촘한 조직이 시선을 사로잡는다. 작가는 대칭으로 정제된 기물을 절개하거나 무너뜨린 뒤, 수천 개의 얇은 포슬린 조각을 하나씩 부착하여 재구성한다. 개별적으로 제작된 이 파편들은 서로 겹치고 이어지며 버섯의 주름이나 산호, 이끼, 지의류 같은 자연의 미시적 풍경을 연상시킨다. 그러나 이는 특정 자연의 외형을 단순히 재현하기보다, 자라나고 붕괴되며 회복하는 생태적 과정을 보여주는 데 가깝다.

수많은 조각을 반복적으로 더해가는 과정은 작품의 시각적 밀도를 높이고, 관람자는 표면을 따라 이어지는 결 속에 축적된 시간과 노동의 과정을 짐작해볼 수 있다. 특히 부서지기 쉬운 조직들이 한데 모여 건축적 구조를 이루는 모습에서 조형미와 긴장감을 읽을 수 있다.

영문학과 역사를 공부한 후 도자를 시작한 워커는 2014년 UCA(University for the Creative Arts)에서 현대 공예(Contemporary Craft) 석사 학위를 취득했으며, 현대 영국 도예가 줄리안 스테어(Julian Stair)의 지도를 받았다. 현재 영국 다트무어 국립공원 남쪽에 위치한 스튜디오에서 작업을 이어가고 있다.



Olivia Walker is a UK-based ceramic artist who expands the traditional forms of vessels into sculptural sur faces by attaching thin, proliferating shards of porcelain onto wheel -thrown pieces. Through the accumulation of material and the deformation of forms, she embodies nature’s cycles of growth and erosion, creation and decay, into ceramic sculptures.

Upon encountering her work, one is immediately captivated by the dense, intricate textures composing the sur face. Walker incises or collapses symmetrically refined vessels before reconstructing them by meticulously attaching thousands of thin porcelain sha rds, one by one. These individually crafted fragments overlap and connect, evoking microscopic landscapes of nature, such as mushroom gills, coral, moss, or lichen. Rather than merely mimicking a specific natural appearance, however, her work captures the ecological processes of growth, decay, and regeneration.

The process of repeatedly adding countless shards heightens the visual density of the artwork, allowing viewers to glimpse the accumulation of time and labor embedded within the texture of the sur face. In particular, a striking sense of formal beauty and tension emerges from the way these fragile, delicate structures come together to form an almost architectural framework.

After studying English literature and history, Walker turned to ceramics, earning her Master ’s degree in Contemporary Craft from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in 2014 under the mentorship of the contemporary British ceramicist Julian Stair. She currently continues her practice at her studio located south of Dartmoor National Park in England.
