갤러리 LVS에서 역대 로에베 공예상 최종 우승자(Winner)와 결승진출자(Finalists)들의 작품을 선보이는 <ONE OF A KIND> 전시를 3주간 선보인다. 2017년 로에베 공예상 출범 이래 최초의 우승자이자 갤러리 LVS와 10여년을 함께한 에른스트 갬펄과 2018년 제 2회 우승자인 도예가 제니퍼 리, 2018년 결승진출자 섬유예술가 장연순, 2021년 결승진출자 도예가 보딜 만츠의 작품을 한 곳에 모은 로에베 공예상 특별전을 개최한다. 본 전시는 서울 공예 박물관에서 ‘2022 로에베 공예상’ 전시를 개최함에 따라, 로에베 재단과의 협업으로 특별전의 형태로 진행한다.

Gallery LVS is holding an exhibition <ONE OF A KIND> for three weeks showcasing the artworks of selected winners and finalists fom the past ‘LOEWE Craft Prize’ events. This exceptional gathering invites Ernst Gamperl, the very first winner of the prize since its establishment who has been in a close relationship with LVS Gallery for about 10 years, Jennifer Lee the potter who’s won the second prize, fabric artist Yeonsoon Chang of the finalists of 2018 and Bodil Manz, a potter from the finalists of 2021. This exhibition will be opening its presence as ‘2022 LOEWE Craft Prize’ in Seoul Craft Museum with special collaboration with the LOEWE foundation.

에른스트 갬펄은 지난 10여년이 넘는 시간동안 갤러리 LVS와 함께했으며, 로에베 공예상의 가장 첫 번째 우승자가 되어 세계적인 명성을 얻었다. 오래된 고목과 떠내려 온 유목과 같이 자연적으로 생을 다한 나무를 카빙 기법으로 다듬어 다양한 오브제의 형태를 만들어왔다. 이는 죽은 나무에게 새로운 형태를 선물하여 생명을 부여하는 의미를 담고 있으며, 이 프로젝트의 이름은 ‘생명의 나무 Tree of Life'로 전개된다. 인위적인 장식을 지양하고 가지가 있었던 부분과 태풍을 맞은 상처 등, 나무 고유의 삶을 그대로 살린 것이 특징이다. 에른스트 갬펄의 작품은 영국 V&A 박물관, 일본 이세이미야케 재단, 한국 아모레퍼시픽 미술관 등 세계 유수의 박물관에 소장되어있다.

Ernst Gamperl has been working with LVS Gallery for more than 10 years now and achieved a global recognition being the first winner of the ‘LOEWE Craft Prize’. With his own carving technique has there been new forms and shapes created from dead trees from the nature or even found on the water. The name of this project is ‘생명의 나무 (Tree of Life)’ which intends to provide a meaning of revitalising the dead trees’ lives into becoming new objects. Any appearance of artificial embellishments were excluded in this reformation but the raw traces of the trees’ life such as scars from a typhoon or spots where branches have been cut out. The works of Ernst Gamperl is in the collection of numbers of renowned museums and galleries worldwide including V&A Museum of the United Kingdom, Issey Miyake Foundation of Japan and Amore-Pacific Museum of Art of Korea.

제니퍼 리는 영국을 대표하는 도예가이자 버나드 리치, 루시 리의 계보를 잇는 도예 역사에서 중요한 작가로 언급된다. 제니퍼 리의 도자는 길게는 10년까지 저장된 흙으로 만들어지며, 흙에는 작가가 고유하게 의미를 부여하는 세월과 추억을 상징하는 자연 물질들이 들어있다. 대지 그 자체를 연상 시키는 붉은색, 갈색, 푸른색, 검은색 등 다양한 색으로 이어지는 오브제는 자연적으로 생겨나는 띠, 모래의 흔적과 같은 패턴을 간직하고 있다. 이는 단순한 도자가 아닌 한 인간이 기억하는 순간과 수많은 역사로 이루어진 생태계, 자연이 융합되어 시대의 유산으로 영원히 남게 되는 것이다. 제니퍼 리는 영국, 스웨덴, 독일, 뉴질랜드, 미국, 캐나다, 한국, 일본, 스위스 등 수많은 국가의 뮤지엄에 작품이 소장되어있는 세계적인 도예가 이다.
 
Jennifer Lee is one of the representative potter of the United Kingdom and usually pointed out significantly as the one who is reproducing the artistic heritage of Bernard Leech and Lucy Rie. Many of her potteries are made from the soil that’s been stored for nearly 10 years. It brings an inseparable value to the potter from which the nature and time of the soil symbolise. Colours of the objects such as the red, brown, blue and black etc remind us the earth. The surface embraces the patterns such as strings that are naturally formed by the levels of soil or traces of them. Timeless heritages of any time travel beyond the meaning of simple objects and represents the harmony of countless histories and the vastness of our ecosystem as they live on. Jennifer Lee is globally successful potter with her works kept in collection of museums in the United Kingdom, Sweden, New Zealand, United States of America, Canada, Korea, Japan, Switzerland and more.


장연순 Yeonsoon Chang (한국) b.1950
LOEWE CRAFT PRIZE 2018 Finalists
 
장연순은 국립현대미술관 ‘올해의 작가 2008’로 선정된 최초의 섬유 예술가이자, LOEWE CRAFT PRIZE 2018에서 Finalist 30인에 한국 섬유분야 작가 중 처음으로 선정되었다. 섬유예술 분야에서 한국을 대표하는 공예가이며 자연재료인 아바카 마 섬유를 바느질하여 만든 ‘Matrix' 시리즈와 신소재인 테프론 매쉬를 레진으로 붙인 ‘중심에 이르는 길’이 대표작이다. 재료와 제작 기법은 바뀌어도 작품이 언제나 가지고 있는 고유한 특징은 레이어의 연속이라는 점이다. 이어지는 레이어는 과거와 현재를 관통하는 세월, 세대, 시대 등을 상징하며 영겁의 시간동안 이루어진 인간의 의(衣 )문화와 수공예, 장인정신을 표현한다. 장연순의 작품은 로에베 재단을 포함, V&A , 시카고 미술관, 국립현대미술관, 서울공예박물관 등에 소장되어있다.
 
Yeonsoon Chang is the very first fabric artist who’s been chosen as the nominee of ‘Artist of the Year 2008’ by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea. In ‘LOEWE Craft Prize 2018’ she has again been nominated as one of the 30 finalists for the first time among all Korean artists who work with fabric. Her main series and work is called ‘Matrix’ created from needle sewed abaca fabric and ‘The Path Which Leads to the Center’ assembled with resin glued teflon mesh fabric. The used material or method of Yeonsoon can change over time but the idea of repeating layers remain still. Piling layers over layers express her craftsmanship and culture extracted from the long years of her life, then they work as symbol of time, passing generation and era that penetrates our contemporary thoughts.
 
 
보딜 만츠 Bodil Manz (덴마크) b.1943
LOEWE CRAFT PRIZE 2021 Finalists
 
보딜 만츠는 덴마크를 비롯하여 세계의 현대 도예가들에게 큰 영향을 준 1세대 도예가이다. 기하학 도형과 경쾌하고 다양한 색깔의 그림을 실린더에 녹여 마치 종이와 계란껍질을 연상시키는 투명하고 얇은 두께의 도자가 대표적인 작품이다. 실린더의 안과 밖은 모두 패턴을 가지고 있고 양쪽의 패턴은 빛이 투과하며 서로 이어진 그림처럼 보여 회화 도자의 특성도 함께 갖는다. 재료와 기법에 대한 깊은 연구와 작가의 창의적인 시도, 자연과 역사로부터 받은 영감이 합쳐진 새롭고 현대적인 도자 형태는 많은 조형 예술가들의 작품에 영향을 주어 세계적으로 존경받고 있다. 보딜만츠의 작품은 미국, 유럽, 아시아 등 수많은 뮤지엄에서 소장할 정도로 저명하며 한 시대를 대표하는 예술가로 평가 받고 있다.

Bodil Manz is the first generation potter who has influenced not only Denmark but many other modern potters. This representative pottery has its unique geometrical patterns with vibrant colours. Its transparent, delicate thickness are what remind us some papers or egg shells. Both the inner and outside of the cylinder’s patterns can be seen as a single piece of painting work due to the light travels into the transparency of its subtle thickness. Deeper understanding of the artist’s material and technique combined with creative experiment is the driving motivation of nature and history inspired modern potters to spread the influence through out the world. Bodil Manz’s works are acquired in numbers of museums in North America, Europe and Asia etc and also receives extraordinary reputation of being the icon of an era.
