■ 전시설명
갤러리LVS & CRAFT(이하 LVS)는 2013년에 런던 콜렉트 첫 참가를 시작으로 2014, 2015, 2018 4회 연속 참가를 통해 한국의 현대도예 작가를 집중 조명하며 영국에 선보여 왔다. 백중백(White in White)을 비롯하여 2018년 런던 콜렉트에서는 수십 년을 명장으로 활동해 온 대한민국명장 3명(김복한, 서광수, 유광열)과 이천시명장 4명(김용섭, 김판기, 유용철, 이규탁)을 비롯하여, 이천을 기반으로 활동하며 현대적인 감각을 가지고 작업하는 작가들(곽경태, 김경수, 김 평, 이은구, 정광식, 한도현)을 선발해 한국의 도자의 전통과 그 미래를 선보여 큰 반향을 불러왔다.
2019년 콜렉트에서는 한국 백자 작품의 1세대인 고 지순탁의 작업을 23여점 선보이며 한국 도자예술의 계보를 분명히 하고 고백자의 아름다움을 전 세계에 알리고자 한다. 지순탁을 중심으로 현재 대한민국 명장에 있는 서광수와 김세용의 작업을 선보이고, 그 뒤를 잇는 3세대 격의 이천시명장 박래헌, 이규탁, 김판기의 작업을 차례로 소개한다. 마지막으로 이천시 현대도자흐름에 기여하는 김대훈, 곽경태, 김대용, 신철, 양지운의 작업까지 아우를 예정이다. 1950년대 이천에 고려도요를 설립하여 지금의 이천도자기가 되기까지 이끌어온 지순탁을 필두로 2세대 대한민국 명장, 3세대의 명장, 그리고 전통의 미감을 이어받아 현대 이천 도자기를 이끌고 있는 전세대의 작업을 한자리에 소개한다.

2014년과 2018년에 이어 런던 콜렉트에, 세 번째 참가하는 이천시는 1000년 이상 장인의 전통을 지키고 발전시켜온, 한국 도자 생산의 중심지이다. 2010년에 유네스코 창의도시로 선정됨으로써 이천 도자기를 전 세계에 알리며 높이 평가 받게 되었다. 이천 도자기는 한국 전통의 뚜렷한 스타일을 타 문화의 도자들과 차별화 시킴으로써 도자 분야에 전반적으로 많은 영향력을 끼쳤다. 옹기, 고려청자(918-1270, 1356-1392) 그리고 조선 시대(1392-1895)의 달항아리와 같은 작품은 대영 박물관, 메트로폴리탄 등 전 세계의 권위 있는 기관들에서 전시되고 소장되었다.
2019년 런던 콜렉트에서 선보이는 35점에는 고 지순탁 선생님의 작업 23점을 비록하여 대한민국 명장과 이천시 명장이 포함되어 있는데 이들은 풍부한 기술력을 바탕으로 세월을 거쳐왔고 지금에까지 활발히 작업함에 따라 현대의 장인이 갖춰야 할 장인정신을 제시하고 발전시키는 업적을 남겼다. 그리고 이들과 함께 살펴볼 미래의 이천도자기를 이끌어나갈 동시대의 젊은 도예가 및 조각가의 작업을 한데 전시함으로써 이천시 도자의 과거 현재 미래를 정리하고 나아갈 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

세계가 현대 공예의 우월한 창의성을 깨닫고, 현대 공예가 영국 경제에 미치는 영향이 그 어느 때보다 명백한 시기에 영국공예청 (Crafts Council)은 런던 사치갤러리에서(Saatchi Gallery) 2019년 2월 15번째 콜렉트(Collect) 개최를 앞두고 있다.
2004년부터 유럽의 연간 예술행사 중 가장 큰 행사로, 콜렉트는 4대륙 39개의 갤러리가 참여하는, 규모와 영역이 남다른 특별한 전시이다. 영국, 미국, 한국, 일본, 프랑스, 노르웨이, 이탈리아, 벨기에, 독일, 네덜란드, 스웨덴에서 온 박물관 수준의 작품과 수백 명의 재능 있는 작가들의 작업은 방문객과 콜렉터들에게 2018년 국제 공예에서의 사람, 그 과정과 재료 그리고 아이디어에 대해 시각적 지표를 제시할 것이다.
오래된 공예 기술을 유지하고 발전시키는 작가, 재료의 경계를 뛰어넘는 실험적 작가 그리고 새로운 프로세스를 개척하는 작가에 이르기까지, 콜렉트는 공예가 현대에서 무엇을 의미하는지 다방면의 모습을 보여주며 미래를 예측해 볼 기회를 제공한다.
제작에 있어 영국 전역에서 선도적 혁신을 주도하는 영국공예청(Crafts Council)은 영국의 모든 장르의 현대 공예를 아울러 가장 권위 있는 기관이다. 1971년에 설립되어 자국 공예의 보호자이자 일인자의 역할은 확장되어 새로운 가능성을 탐색하고 가능케 하며, 제작 방법과 기술의 개발까지 포함한다. 영국에서 가장 성공적이고 존경 받는 몇몇 시장의 발전에 중추적인 역할을 해온 영국공예청은 공예 분야에서 새로운 인재를 발굴하고 힘을 실어 주는 데 주력하며 신흥 작가들이 전시 가능한 플랫폼 구축, 사람과 산업 간의 연결고리 구축, 그리고 실용적이고 영감을 주는 자원을 제공하여 차세대 공예가의 앞날을 지원하는 것이다

From Gallery LVS & LVS CRAFT (Gallery LVS) first participation in Collect 2013 and following participation in 2014 and 2015, they have shared highlights of Korean contemporary porcelain artists in London. The gallery has participated with theme of White in White, and in 2018, under the theme of ‘Contemporary & Modern Ceramics of Korea: Modern Masters’ they have shared works of three Korea Hand Masters (KIM Bok-Han, SEO Kwang-Soo, YOO Kwang-Yeol), four Icheon City Hand Masters (KIM Yong-Sup, KIM Pan-ki, YU Yong-Cheol, LEE Kyu-Tak) and selection of Icheon based artists (KWAK Kyung-Tae, KIM Kyung-Su, KIM Pyung, LEE Eun-Gu, JUNG Kwang-Sik, HAN Do-Hyun). The exhibition has provided a chance to re-frame idea of traditional Korean porcelain which has brought great sensation.
At this year’s London Collect 2019, Gallery LVS look forward to spread the beauty of traditional white porcelain and clarify the tradition of Korean ceramic art by presenting 23 works JI Soon-Tak, who is the first generation white porcelain ceramist. Focusing on JI Soon-Tak’s works, the gallery is also presenting works of two Korea Hand Masters (SEO Kwang-Soo and KIM Se-Yong) who are the second generation of Korean ceramics and three Icheon City Hand Masters (PARK Rae-Heon, LEE Kyu-Tak and KIM Pan-Ki), the third generation of Korean ceramics. Lastly, works of artists (KIM Dae-Hoon, KWAK Kyung-Tae, KIM Dae-Yong, SHIN Chul and YANG Ji-Woon) who are currently contributing to Icheon’s contemporary ceramics are also presented. They are presenting works from all the generations from JI Soon-Tak, who built Goryeo Doyo in Icheon in 1950 and led it until it became Icheon Ceramics of today, to second generation Masters to the third generation Masters and to ceramists who are leading Icheon Ceramics by following the traditional sense of beauty.

Icheon City, participating in London Collect for the third time following 2014 and 2018, is the heart of Korean ceramic production keeping and developing the tradition of artisanship dating back over 1,000 years. In 2010, Icheon City was designated as a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art which allowed its ceramics to be recognized and appreciated on an international level. Its distinct style has at the same time distinguished itself from those of other cultures while having a great influence on the domain in general. Works such as onggi, Korean earthenware, the famous jade green celadon of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1270, 1356–1392) and the white orb-shaped moon jars from the Joseon dynasty (1392–1895) can be found in prestigious institutions worldwide including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Amongst the 35 objects featured include pieces include 23 works of JI Soon-Tak, works of Korea Hand Masters and an Icheon City Hand Masters. The achievements made by JI Soon-Tak and Hand Masters of Korea and Icheon City have allowed for the development of a rich practice blending longstanding and contemporary craftsmanship. They would like to suggest the direction for the Icheon Ceramics to follow in the future by presenting other works made by young contemporary ceramists and sculptors.

At a time when the world has woken up to the visionary creativity of contemporary craft and when – with craft skills making a £3.4bn contribution – its importance to UK economy has never been more explicit, the Crafts Council is delighted to announce the return of Collect to London’s Saatchi Gallery for its 15th edition in February 2019.
An annual highlight of Europe’s creative calendar since 2004, Collect brings together 39 galleries from four continents for a celebration of making, extraordinary in both scale and scope. Museum-quality works and installations from hundreds of the most talented makers in the UK, USA, South Korea, Japan, France, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden will offer visitors and collectors a multidisciplinary overview of the people, processes, materials and ideas defining international craft in 2019. From the makers sustaining and enhancing historic craft techniques to experimental artists breaking material boundaries and pioneering new processes, Collect provides an immersive and wide-ranging snapshot of what craft means today, and a glimpse of what it might become in the future.
