Gallery LVS & CRAFT is pleased to announce its 3rd participation in SOFA Chicago 2018 as part of a project initiated by Korea Craft and Design Foundation(KCDF), a public organization under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism which was founded to promote craft and design nourished by the Korean ancestors and to succeed and widely spread Korea’s own traditional life style around the globe.

Since the successful introduction of contemporary Korean Crafts in the previous year, Gallery LVS & CRAFT proudly present 8 contemporary craft artists most of whom have succeeded the true aesthetics and technique in their fields. The gallery hope this exhibition will contribute to an increased interest in and better understanding of contemporary Korean Crafts. The exhibition will serve as an opportunity to not only present a wide spectrum of works by contemporary Korean Craftsmen who have been forming ‘Tradition of today’ with new materials methods but also to introduce the balanced formative aesthetic of both traditional and contemporary Korean Crafts.

This year, the gallery will share fresh approaches and new aesthetic beauty of Korean contemporary craft. ‘Chaesangjang’ Shin-Jeong SEO, the 53rd important cultural asset and master of Chaesang, has dedicated herself promoting and preserving Korean’s Crafts. Chaesang is a technique of bamboo weaving. Shin-Jeong SEO is applying traditional techniques to create living items with contemporary design. In addition, CHANG Yeon-soon’s work, which has been featured in the SOFA and selected as a finalist of the 2018 Loewe Craft Prize (2018), will be introduced. Chang is a representative artist of Korean modern textile crafts. She embodies the beauty of the fabric as a simple unit that forms herself and the world. Her past work and the most recent work using gold will be presented at SOFA. Yang Byung-yong, a woodcraft artist who designs and produces Korean tableware. He has remarkably been introduced as the subtle design of small tray tables. Lee Kang-Hyo’s Buncheong will be newly shown by the gallery. Lastly, Lee Jung-Won, who is working on the white porcelain, will be introduced in this year, again. She is a member of the first-generation contemporary white porcelain artists: ‘White in White’ (Gallery LVS&Craft hosted its biannual exhibition) taught by Professor Kapsun Hwang at Seoul National University, Lee creates ceramic works that marks the shift of ‘craft’ to ‘Contemporary craft’. This exhibition mainly focused on the continuity of the aesthetic in traditional Korean crafts and its influence on contemporary crafts. The gallery would show to public how it has changed since the earliest work to the present. The discovery of Korean aesthetic value and characteristics identified its classic beauty in Crafts: aesthetics of naturality, classicality, simplicity and plainness or emptiness. It deepens the beauty and aesthetic value of each work and contributes understanding the identity of Korean culture. The rare combination in this year’s exhibition hope to show the most exquisite diversity of Korean Crafts.

Gallery LVS& CRAFT hope to push forward with the momentum and continuously present unique aesthetics and techniques from Korea that are also universally comprehensible via the language of contemporary design.
