조선왕조 오백년 동안 제작된 달항아리에는 늘 수식어가 붙는다. '순백의 미' 이다.
하얀 돌을 부식시켜 만든 백토는 만드는 과정이 고난의 연속이다. 그렇기에 가마에서 구워지면서 표면에 생기는 우연한 찌그러짐 하나에도 선조들의 미의식을 담겨있다.

사람들 마음속에 자리 잡고 있는 달항아리의 모습은 마치 움직이며 변화하는 달의 형상을 닮았다. 넉넉한 형태 안에 절제된 아름다움이 공존하고, 완벽한 원형이 아님에도 자연스러운 균형감을 유지한다. 하나의 둥근 모양이지만 각기 각도에서 묘하게 다른 모습으로 눈에 담긴다.

달항아리의 절정이라고 할 수 있는 15-16세기의 작품을 재현하는 과정에서 문평도 많은 고민을 해왔다. 그렇게해서 탄생한 마음이 담긴 달항아리는 조선 달항아리를 재현하고자 했던 초기의 마음가짐이 아닌, 작가가 아름다움을 재해석하는 새로운 정신을 담고 있다.

문평의 가장 큰 고민은 옛 것과 비슷한 것을 계속해서 새롭게 만들어내며 느끼는 자기 자신의 한계였다. 순백미와 절제가 조화롭게 공존하는 선조들의 달항아리가 오랫동안 가슴 속에 박혀, 그 것을 넘어설 수 없다는 생각에 부딪치고 있었던 것이다.

그리고 10년이 지나 그가 만들어 낸 달 항아리는 선조들의 것과 같은 순백의 빛을 얹어, 달 표면의 부서지는 듯한 독특한 질감을 더하여 마침내 옛 것으로부터 새로운 것을 창조했다. 그 것은 선조들의 달항아리에 대한 존엄함을 넘어, 달항아리 고유의 힘차고 당당한 존재감을 세월을 초월하여 보여준다. 오랜 시간을 견뎌온 것만 같은 깊은 유약에서 나오는 빛은 그의 열정과 도전 그 자체이다.

늘 작가들은 보다 나은 새로운 예술에 도전한다. 문평도 달항아리를 그렇게 보아왔다. 둥글고 하얀 것, 그리고 찌그러진 비정형의 자태는 늘 그래왔던 것처럼 변화를 주기가 어렵다. 옛 것을 마음 속에서 떨쳐내기란 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 작은 변화라도 이루고자 했던 고민이 10년의 시간을 거쳐 마침내 큰 벽을 넘어서는 순간이 되었다. 흙의 색감을 바꾸고자 하고, 유약을 새롭게 개발하는 과정들을 거쳐 문평의 달항아리는 힘을 얻었다.

넓게 펼쳐진 전시장 안에 툭 놓여진 문평의 달항아리는 그 자태가 주는 힘으로 공백마저 가득찬 것으로 느껴지게 한다. 문평의 달항아리를 가만히 들여다보면, 그가 오랜 시간 담고자 했던 새로운 변화가 힘있게 마음으로 다가온다.

‘달항아리는 달항아리야’

눈에서 마음으로 담아낸 문평의 오랜 도전이었던 달항아리에는 조선의 것을 넘어 새로운 미래를 여는 힘이 넘쳐난다.

Moon jars made during the 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty are always given a modifier. It is 'pure white beauty'.

White clay is made by eroding natural white stones. This is a series of hardships. That is why the accidental dents on the surface of the moon jar contain a sense of aesthetics.

The shape of the moon jar resembles the shape of the moving and changing moon. The understated beauty coexists in a generous shape, and it maintains a natural sense of balance even though it is not a perfect round shape.
This round shape catches the eye in a strangely different shape from each angle.

In the process of recreating the works of the 15th and 16th centuries, which can be said to be the culmination of the moon jar, Mun pyung has also given a lot of thought. The moon jar with the heart that was born in that way is not the initial mindset that wanted to reproduce the Joseon moon jar, but contains the new spirit of the artist reinterpreting beauty.

Mun pyung's biggest concern was the limitation of himself, which he felt while continuously creating new things similar to the old ones.
The moon jars of our ancestors, in perfect harmony, had been etched in his mind for a long time, and he thought he could not overcome them.

Ten years later, his moon jar finally broke free from the old and created a new one. It has the same pure white light as the old one, but it has become a moon jar with a unique texture that resembles the surface of the moon.

It shows the dignified appearance of the moon jar that transcends time, including the respect for the old moon jar. The light from the glaze that has been deepened by enduring a long time is his passion and challenge itself.

Just as artists are always challenging new and better art, so is he.
It is difficult to make big changes in the round, white, and distorted atypical appearance. Because it is not easy to get rid of the old things from the mind.

After 10 years of thinking about making even a small change, it was the moment when the big wall was finally overcome.

Mun pyuong's moon jar gained strength through the process of changing the color of the clay and developing a new glaze.

The lofty power felt from his moon jar placed in the expansive exhibition hall fills even the void. Looking into his moon jar is like looking into his life, heart, and history.

‘After all, a moon jar is a moon jar’

Mun Pyung's long-standing challenge, expressed from eyes to heart, is overflowing with power to open up a new future beyond the old moon jar.
