STATEMENT
태권V가 가진 ‘유년의 추억’이라는 대중적 공감대를 만화의 극단적인 평면성과 글과 그림이 함께 구성된 이야기구조를 활용해 나를 포함한 현 사회의 태권브이세대의 영웅에 대한 꿈이 사라진 청년 백수의 무기력에 대한 이야기로 풀어내면서 작업이 시작된다.
태권V는 이제 더 이상 영웅이 아니라 때로는 순수하고 유머 스럽고 천진하지만 우유부단하고 부조리한 현대인의 가벼운 삶을 살아가는 생활인이다. 작품 속 태권V는 용맹한 기백을 뽐내는 대신, 100cc오토바이에 철가방을 싣고 자장면을 배달한다. 때로는 술에 취해 친구와 함께 어깨동무를 하고 젊음의 슬픔을 토로하고, 때로는 그리운 누군가를 오매불망하며, 때로는 실연도 당하고 때로는 갑옷을 갖춰 입은 무장한 채 비장한 모습으로 자력갱생을 다짐한다. 사회적 무관심 속에 퇴색해버린 현대인의 모습이자 소외되고 힘없는 서민에 대한 나의 애정 어린 시각이기도 하다.
만화 속 영웅을 소재로 한다는 점 외에도 모든 작품 속에서 읽혀지는 글자들은 내가 담고자 하는 주제의식을 직접적으로 또 때로는 시조나 시구, 노래 가사 등을 통해 간접적으로 드러낸다. 우리 조상들이 대장경을 새기면서 호국의 의지를 되새겼다면 나는 판에 글자를 새기면서 개인적인 염원을 새기는 마음으로 작업을 한다.
삼국지 시리즈에서 태권V는 사고뭉치 영웅으로 태어나게 된다. 이야기는 고구려 멸망이후 발해의 건국과정 속에서 시작된다. 소설 삼국지의 전체적인 틀을 빌려 우리 역사적 소재로 재구성 했다. 고구려 이후 잃을 뻔했던 만주지역에 대한 우리 민족의 활동무대가 지속된다는 전제하에 개인적 염원을 작품 속에 풀어 놓는 것이다.
현덕(태권브이), 운장(그레이트마징가), 익덕(마징가제트), 자룡(그렌다이져), 공명은도원결의를 맺고 운명을 같이 할것을 약속한 다음부터 이들은 거침없이 외적에게 대항을 한다.
최근에는 평범한 모습으로 달동네에 살고 있다. 낙후된 시설에서 조금 불편할지도 모를 그곳에서도 서로 사랑하고, 꿈을 이루고 있는 소소한 삶의 일부분을 이야기 하고 있다. 풍족하거나 그렇지 않거나 모든 삶의 일부분의 소소한 일상들이 주는 행복한 삶을 지극히 솔직하게 작업에 담아내고 있다. 달동네 또는 가난한 동네에 산다는 이유로 그들을 한없이 불쌍하고 가엾게만 보고 있을지 모를 시선 속에 그들도 지금 이 시간 우리와 함께 언제나 밤에는 밝은 달이 가장 가까이 훤히 비춰주는 그곳에 행복하게 살고 있다.
드로잉을 하고 나무판에 그림과 글을 조각칼로 파내고 그 위에 화려한 형광색과 원색들을 촌스럽거나 말거나 주저 없이 바로 채색해 작품을 제작하는 것을 반복하다보면 힘들고 지칠 때도 있지만 나는 촌스러움 말고는 내세울게 없는 사람이다.
Shrewdly veiled under the multi-colored brilliance reminiscent of the traditional Korean costume Saekdong, Seong Tae Jin’s skillfully carved wood panels are comic parodies of modern day utopia. Through his embossed surfaces that remind viewers of the woodblocks that create mass-produced prints, Seong takes on the visual languages of both traditional craft and contemporary expressionism to carve a grand image of farce on wood ? a material that implies permanence and importance. These recent works are ocular wonderlands where marks of the carving wood reveal layers of colors beneath, further enhancing the textural quality of the wood surface as well as the effects of shadows and depth in the image. Seong not only continues to challenge himself in technical innovation, but also strives to blur the lines between painting and wood-carving by emphasizing marks left by the artist’s hands on the wood’s surface.
Assuming the popular character of the Korean heroic robot Taekwon V, Seong narrates tales and dreams that reveal a combination of patriotism, violence, debauchery, and triteness, as a channel for his escapism and role playing. He employs multiple perspectives to illustrate the depth of the scene. In the vibrant configurations of intricate geometrics, and blazing palette of primary colors past characters of Seong’s works can be found, showing his attempt to use even a landscape painting to further tell stories.
